HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

One minute I’m recovering from a quad strain, and the next, it’s 2013. Holy friggin cow. Where’d the time go?!?!

So for the past few months, I’ve been dealing with a few family tragedies, transitioning jobs, and transitioning schools. It’s been quite chaotic, hence the blogging hiatus. But now I’m back, and read to kick some bootie! Let’s get down to business!

2013 New Year’s Resolutions Goals!

  • Race each distance: 5k, 10k, 13.1, and 26.2. While I completed the Nike Women’s Marathon in October, it wasn’t my finest moment. (Physically or mentally!) Let’s just say that I’m glad I did it, and I honestly thought about dying. [Dear Random Team In Training Coach: THANK YOU for telling me how little I had to go until the finish!! I honestly had no idea where I was, and you seriously gave me a boost!!!] I told myself that the NWM was the only 26.2 that I’d ever do. But then I decided that I was not going to accept a crappy race. I will do one more. And I had better have a kick ass experience! 😉 And believe it or not, I’ve never competed in a 10k. I’ve done all the other distances, and definitely run bunches of 10k distances, but never for a race. So that’s on my goal list. 😉
  • Participate in the #Digital40Days. I read about a yoga challenge through the Lululemon Blog, and I figure it’s a great way to do something different, and create some much-needed calm in my life! Bring on the BLISS!!! It’s free to join the challenge, but for those who want more, there’s more incentive to pay for the extensive program. Come try it with me!
  • Eat Clean, 80% of the time. Let’s face it. I’m not giving up my red wine or my dark chocolate. It’s just not going to happen. But, I can control my eating so that I can still succeed in fat loss and strength gain. By knowing that I’m going to indulge from time to time, I can stick to eating clean easier. [Notice how I said “easier”, not “easy”. There are some times where it’s going to be rough. Accept it and move on.] I picked up a copy of Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo. I’m not going Paleo, but I really like getting new ideas for gluten-free foods and ways to prep veggies. Breakfast this morning? The Blueberry Lemon Muffins. Verdict? AMAZING! My son is gluten sensitive, and both of us get bored with the same foods over and over, so getting new gluten-free ideas helps keep eating fun 🙂blueberry lemon muffins

For now, those are my goals. I’m sure I’ll come up with smaller, more specified goals throughout the year. That’s what’s great about goals: create ’em, crush ’em, create more!

Oh, wait! I almost forgot the most important goal for 2013! Take my family to Disneyland!!! Spending time with the people most important to me at the happiest place in the world. . . Can’t go wrong!!! 🙂

What are your goals for 2013?

Fort Mason, San Francisco

Saturday started out as a great morning. . . I had been to the Britannia Arms (an English pub near my house) with my cousin and a couple friends Friday night, getting home around 1am. So I expected to be a bit tired come Sat morn but I woke up raring and ready to go! (a benefit to not drinking: no hangover!)

The plan was to volunteer at the Wipro San Francisco Marathon’s Expo from noon to 5pm. Since it’s a bit of a drive to SF, I wanted to have the family packed in the car by about 9:30, so that way I would have plenty of time to drive, get caught in traffic, get lost, find my way there, find parking, and walk up to the Expo. Have you ever tried to drive and park in San Francisco? Yeah, good luck with that. It’s like a traffic scene from The Fifth Element. Insane.

All the way up to SF, the boys were amazingly well-behaved. This was surprising to me. There were no tantrums, “are we there yet”s, and no barking at other cars. Not that my son would bark at other cars. . .

 

As we were driving, I noticed that it was getting a little hard to talk. My throat was sore and scratchy and the junction of my throat/mouth was stinging. Crap. Well, as usual, I made a comment about and then promptly ignored it. It took about 45 minutes for the rest of my body to start yelling at me. We were just outside South San Francisco when I admitted that all I wanted to do was crawl into bed and nurse my aching body. Awesome. Thank you, Universe, I love being sick on the weekends during the summer. Yay.

So instead of spreading my sickie germies to a bunch of marathoners, we decided to just take a walk and get some fresh air, since we were pretty much in San Francisco. We went to Fort Mason (I highly suggest going there if you’re in San Francisco!) and visited a Swiss Mountain Dog event. Just an informal barbecue with lots of Swiss doggies. Chewie was in heaven. Puppies and hot dogs?!?! SCORE!!! He was one of the only 2 Saint Bernards there, which are the biggest of the Swiss breeds, so he got lots of attention.

Since I wasn’t feeling up to socializing, (oh hell, I wasn’t up for even smiling. by this point, i felt like dog poop) we started out for a little walk around Fort Mason and down to the water’s edge.

Little history lesson: Fort Mason was built in 1864, and used as a defense for the San Francisco Bay during the Civil War. Yes, you read that right. The Civil-frickin-War. Needless to say, Fort Mason is old and has some great history to it. If you’re interested in learning more about it, click here.

Since the Fort is a Historical Point, there were lots of signs around describing different aspects of what the Fort used to do/serve as.

From 1909 and through WWII, soldiers were shipped out to war from Fort Mason, helping the US to become a global power. Wow, that just sounded like a book report or history homework, didn’t it? Sorry about that. 😉

See that group of people down there? Yeah, that’s a BEER FESTIVAL. That’s cruel, Universe, to make me sick and tease me with a Beer Fest. Just cruel.

For everyone outside of California, San Francisco was destroyed in 1906 by a major earthquake. The city made a huge recovery and hosted the World Fair in 1915. Does the World Fair even still exist? Add that to my “Google it” list. . . 

Anyone up for a swim to Alcatraz?

It wasn’t long before I was at my limit, so we headed back to the car. Whenever I’m sick I crave french fries, so after a trip to In-N-Out, we were back on the road, heading home. And apparently, I missed the memo that it was nap time.

When we got home, it was time to snuggle on the couch and watch the Olympics. This is my son’s first time really watching the summer olympics (he was too young to stay up late for the Beijing broadcasts) and he’s really into the swimming! Time to get him back into the pool! 😉 So I’ve been on the couch since Saturday night, recuperating from whatever I’ve got. While I’m not healthy yet, I am feeling better, so we’re going to brave the park today. My son can play for a bit and then hang out while I walk up and down the hill. My Nike+ Running app is going to yell at me for slacking in the speed department, but hey, you’ve always got to take care of your body and come back into exercising slowly.

Nike Women’s Marathon 2012 and Nike Fuelband

Now that I’m done with the Jungle Run, at least until next year, it’s time to concentrate on training for the Nike Women’s Marathon. This will be my first full marathon, so this training will take it’s toll, both mentally and physically. Time to cowgirl up and start ramping up and running more than I’ve ever run before. Goodie. But, that also means that it’s time for new shoes! Score!

I’m really really really stoked that my feet were pain free the whole time while wearing my Mizuno Wave Creation 13s, so I’ll probably be really boring and buy the same shoes again. And I really like the pink color, too, so I’ll be super lame and get the exact same ones that I’ve just “retired.”

can you really blame me for wanting another pair? 😉

In hopes of kicking my training schedule’s bootay, I’m drooling over the the Nike Fuelband. Have you seen that thing? Snazzy! I could wear jewelry like that! 😉 It counts your movements and your (theoretical) caloric burn, and helps you meet and exceed your fitness goals! *I have to put in the disclaimer that no device made for mass consumption can get your exact caloric burn. Some things come really close, such as the BodyBugg, but nothing is dead-on.*

The Dammit Run

With less than 24 hours ’til my half marathon, what do you think I was doing?

Sadly, no, I was not doing any Downhill Racing Tricycles.

But if you guessed “nursing sore muscles, bitching about being sore, and laughing about how  soreness will effect tomorrow,” you’d be right. Yup, in the process of kicking everyone’s asses yesterday in Tabata Hell,  I effectively kicked my own. I’d love it, except for the fact that my injured quad is now also sore. And still expected to not fall off tomorrow morning. Good thing I already planned today as a Rest Day!

And if you guessed “signing up for another race,” you’d also be correct!

Yup, another race! The 39th Annual Dammit Run!! If I were on the planning committee, I’d totally put a comma after “Dammit”, but I guess that’s just me. . . Plus, the race is about running across the dam at the Lexington Reservoir, so the sentiment of “Damnit, keep going” doesn’t really convey “Run across the dam.” Too bad. I guess that’s why I’m not on that committee, eh?

So here I am, with less than 12 hours until my 13.1 adventure, and I’m rewriting my calendar and schedule to accommodate the new run. I do so love my calendars! 😉 The Dammit Run is only a 5-miler, but it’s uphill on a trail that wasn’t really designed for crowds. Oh hell, who am I kidding. It’s on a trail that was designed for a single runner. This’ll be interesting. But provided that I don’t end up in the hospital, it’s going to be great because: A) I get to buy new trail running shoes! Score!!!; and B) it’ll help me prep for the hills of San Francisco that will be kicking my ass in October. I don’t live near too many hills, so I need all the practice I can get! 😉

 

I’m not a big hill runner. In fact, when it comes to hills, I’m probably the biggest whiner you’ve ever met. I avoid them like the plague. And yes, I realize that the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco is nothing but hills. That ridiculousness has not been lost on me.  And knowing my luck, every time I start up a hill, I’ll hit a headwind. . . it never fails.

Next up on my agenda tonight: figuring out what I’m going to wear tomorrow. I know, I know. I totally should have had that already planned out and given it a test run. I’m using the excuse that I’ve already run in all of my running clothes, so I’ve already ‘tested’ whatever will be chosen for tomorrow. 😉 Since I already know what chafes after 6 miles, and what holds in too much sweat, and all that nonsense, my deciding factor of what I actually wear is quite simple: what will make me look the best in the running pics? Oh come on, I can’t be the only one to have thought that! 😉 I’m leaning towards my running faves: Black Swan Cool RacerBack and Run: Back On Track Crops, both from Lululemon.

 

 

And my pink Mizunos, of course. 😉

Making my playlist!

I don’t always run with music, so it makes music a big motivator for me! I’m putting together my playlist for my first half marathon of 2012. Wow, that makes it sound like I doing a lot of ’em this year. . . Honestly, I’ve got the Jungle Run Half on the 15th, then nothing ’til October when I do the Nike Women’s Marathon (my first full 26.2!), and then ending the season with the Santa Barbara International (I’m doing the half).

I’m up for suggestions of events in NorCal for all the times in-between!!!! 😉

 

So here’s a peek at my playlist so far:

I want to make sure I’ve got 3 hours of music, and then put it on shuffle, so that way I don’t hear the exact same songs in the exact same order as my trial run next week. (I like to make sure that I don’t think a song is great only to find out at mile 9 that it’s too slow and ruins my vibe. Yes, it’s happened before.)

And here’s where we come to the GoodNews/BadNews.

One thing making me nervous. . . My quad decided to check out a couple weeks ago. Translation: my quads hate me. I’m a visual person, so in really technical doctor-y speak, here’s what’s going on:

I see a sh*t load of foam rolling in my immediate future. And ice. I have to get to the store to get ice. . . So my goal for this year’s Jungle Run is the exact same as last year: finish without crawling across the finish line. I managed it last year off of foot surgery, with no training, so this year should be okay. Key word: should.

The cool news is that a few of the kickin’ ladies from the Lululemon Run Club are doing the half, and some are doing the 10k! So I’ll be with really supportive people that I’m already used to running with! Yay!! So between my music in one ear, and catching up on gossip in the other ear, I think I’ll be well distracted and motivated! 🙂

Lululemon actually sends these signs to their stores for their educators to use at local races! Isn’t that totally kick a$$?! 🙂

Treadmill Workouts Don’t Have To Be Boring

I’ll admit it.

I FRIGGIN HATE THE TREADMILL!!!

It’s boring. Also, the treadmills at my gym face out from the building. This means that you’re watching the weather, the traffic, the people at the grocery store, and Burger King. You’d think it’d be motivational. It’s not. It makes you crave french fries.

But let’s face it: sometimes, using a treadmill is the only way you’re going to get in your run. At some point, it’s going to happen.

So I thought I’d share a couple videos with you to help keep the treadmill as interesting as possible. Are you going to look/feel like an idiot? Very likely. Are you going to get results? YES.

Today, I’m set to run an easy 3 miles. I’m guessing I’ll run the usual routes, but we’ll see what the weather’s like. (Running in full sun in the middle of the afternoon = torture.)

Have you checked out the Lululemon SeaWheeze App?!?! It’s AMAZEBALLS AWESOME!!! It’s set to get you ready for their SeaWheeze half marathon, but it’s a great design for any half marathon! It has a perfect schedule to set me up for my half in July, and with extending all training runs a bit, it’s a great schedule to get me ready for the Nike Women’s Marathon in October. The app has videos and demos, and great descriptions of what your runs should look and feel like. Places to take notes for workouts, too. And come on, how awesome is hearing a rest day being called “sweatpantsana”?! 😉 It’s free through the iTunes App Store (sorry, I don’t know about the Android Marketplace. But I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be there!) Check it out!!!

Thankful To Be Running

After a day-long adventure of herding 3 7-year old boys through the Monterey Bay Aquarium today, I was toast. I joking told my son’s teacher that I’ll feel a bit more alert once I had some tequila in me. Her response: “After I leave here, I’m going to the B-A-R.” I love my son’s teacher. It’s like we’re the same person. 😉

So when I looked at my Running Calendar (yes, I have a calendar dedicated to just running. Are you surprised after this post?) I cringed when I saw “3 miles, speed.” Hell. No. Who’s up for margaritas?!

So after margaritas (you thought I was joking, didn’t you) I came home and noticed that Lululemon Santana Row is having a Run Club social hour tonight. They’re going over calendars (yay!) and running questions, which I’m totally down for! But after spending 3 hours driving today and being dead tired, I wasn’t up for driving another 2 hours.

I cruised online for a few minutes to distract myself from the speed work that I wasn’t doing, when I came across this article. . .

My 10 Favorite Race Medal Displays

I’m new to the running event scene, but already it’s time to start thinking about where to stash my bling. I have the race bibs in my scrapbook, and I’m holding on to my finisher shirts to make a quilt; but what to do with the medals?

I’ve been looking at race medal hangers recently. I had no idea there were so many out there! So I’ve compiled a list of the ones that I like, in hopes that by the end of this post I’ll make my decision as to which one I want to get.

In no particular oder:

this one really doesn’t have any racing significance, but I LOVE swallows and nautical stars. I even have them tattooed on me.

I’d want hooks instead of a bar, but I like the humor.

Now this is my kind of humor! But, again, I’d want hooks.

I like the idea of putting the bibs with the medals.

This would work since this is the first year that I’m doing both. It’ll feed my inner organization freak, too.

Final verdict:

I’m going to make my own. I’ll make a board like number 11, customize an UpperCase Living saying (I really like the .2 saying from the third one pictured, and my favorite running saying is, “26.2… it’s that damn .2 that’ll get ya!” so I may even use that), and get some nice quality hooks or drawer pulls. Done deal.

I also saw this on Pinterest, and while it’s an amazingly cute idea, I don’t think I’ll do it. But for those of you looking for a really interesting way to display your race medals, try magnets! Remove the ribbon and apply some epoxy resin on a heavy duty magnet, and, voilà! Race Medal Magnets! Cute, right?!?!

Drooling on a Wednesday Morning

Let’s all take a minute this morning and drool admire David Beckham running, shall we?

There, now how can you have a bad day when watching that?! You’re welcome! 😉

So today I am going through my bookmarked racing events, trying to pick out a race that I’ll volunteer for. Let’s face it: no race happens without volunteers. So it’s time to do my part.

I told them to screen their applicants... *sigh*

I thought this was going to be easy and fun… Oooh! There! That one! Yay! *sign the forms* Done!

I should really learn to shut my inner blonde up.

This is harder than I thought it would be. The logistics to consider: Do I really want to drive over an hour to San Francisco to BE AT the race at 4:30am? Not really. Who’s going to watch my son for me? Probably my mom… I should probably ask her… Do I want to volunteer as an individual, or gather up a team? Hadn’t really thought of it… Green Team? Water? Metals? T-Shirt Exchange? Expo? Crap. There’s more to this than I originally thought.

After looking around (my love for the internet is reinforced daily), I have decided to volunteer at the San Francisco Marathon in July. I figure I can volunteer at registration on Saturday and then run it on Sunday. I know, I know, what can I say? I’m a genius.

Plus, although it’s not on the same “course,” it’ll help me figure out what running in San Francisco is like. I need to be prepared for the Nike Women’s Marathon in October.
