Jungle Run 2012

It’s official: I survived my second half marathon.

Although there were about 6 Lululemon Run Club/Employees at the event, I ended up running alone for most of the race, simply because I was planning on running about 10:30s, and most everyone else was planning on 8:50s.

As a group, we only ran one lap around that track that we were starting at because we were running late. Which worked well for me, since I was at the back of the starting lineup, the first mile was going to be a warmup pace anyway. My playlist was set up pretty perfectly, if I do say so myself. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I started with Florida Georgia Line’s new song, “Cruise,” which was theย perfect pacing for a warmup!

After that, I had the pretty typical hip-hop beats for a while. Which I really only listen to when I need to get fired up, since I normally don’t like the lyrics, just the beats and the tune. When the song “Outta Your Mind” (Lil Jon feat. LMFAO) came on, I just started visualizing the routine from So You Think You Can Dance. It was great! It gave me a break from thinking about running! I’m going to have to plan that kind of music more often!

And let me tell ya, when Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” came on, I started thinking, “Well, I’m not shaking, but I sure am jiggling!” ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yes, I talk to my music, if you can’t ย already tell. I like to think that I’m not the only one who does this. . .

I may have had some choice words for Flo-Rida when he started singing about a “Good Feeling,” cuz there wasn’t a single good feeling at mile 9 when I thought I was on mile 10. I’m gonna blame that brain fart on being blonde. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So while I was conversing with the artists on my playlist, I noticed that I was playing leap-frog with two other girls my age (they were running/walking, while I was just at a solid jog.) Girl number one was in a Lululemon CRB in Flash (which I had actually thought about wearing!) and girl number two was in a Lululemon Run:For Your Money in Pow Pink (I am so jealous, I want that top! It was so cute!)

Flash girl, during her running intervals, was running with her spine hunched to her right, as if she was doing oblique crunches. She must have been in pain. I felt bad for her, so I kept an eye on her to make sure it didn’t get any worse. (When she was walking, she had great posture, she only hunched to side while running.) We met up around mile 3, so we ran almost the whole race together. Pink girl and I met up ’round about mile 8. So the three of us got to run the hard part together.

Oh, did I mention that miles 10.5-12.25 are UPHILL? In the sun? In the dirt? No? I forgot to mention it? Oops. Well, now you know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once we hit mile 10.5, we started running on the un-paved fire road on the side of the freeway. In the sun. Uphill. Ew. This part of the race is the only part that is out-and-back, so you know that as soon as you round the cutting point, you’re gonna be running downhill. The anticipation for that point makes the uphill seem reeeeeeally long.

All three of us, Flash/Pink/me, managed to go around those beautiful orange cones that marked the end of the “out” part at pretty much the same time. I started walking so I could hydrate without swallowing too much air and take a gel. So with that, both Flash and Pink were in front of me. I started running again when the Nike+ GPS lady told me that I had just passed mile 12.5. YES!! ALMOST THERE!!!

So I started running, and even picked up the pace a bit. My quad, which had been quiet the whole race (it was tired, but not hurting) decided that I was now going too fast and started to bitch at me. I told it that if wasn’t going to fall off, that it needed to shut up and get with the program. So on we went.

I passed Flash first, and she was in her walking interval. As I passed her, I turned so I could give her a huge smile, yell out, “Come on! Let’s GO!!” and wave in that “follow me” sign language. She started laughing, and picked up the pace, and we were off! Running a bit faster than we had been.

Then we came up to Pink, who was walking at that point. Just like before, I turned to her, gave her a huge smile, and yelled, “Come on! Let’s GO!!” with the “follow me” hand gesture. Sure enough, all three of us were running together, pushing ourselves to get the damn race over with. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Flash dropped off first, round about the 12.75 mile marker, followed by Pink, not too much later. I was in my mode, though, so I kept going. And when I saw that 13 mile marker, and the Nike+ GPS lady told me I had gone 13 miles, I kicked it into overdrive. Dredging up my old sprinting skills (7th grade Track & Field, anyone?), I made it over that finish line.

I kept walking around so I didn’t cramp up (there were a few people there who never got that memo; I felt pretty bad for them) and headed over to the shirt pick up. (At this point, I hadn’t even looked at the medal I was handed. I was just concentrating on that fine line between drinking a lot of water without throwing it up.) And then I saw it: a HIPPO!!! The mascot for the Jungle Run 2012 was a hippo! I LOVE LOVE LOVE HIPPOS!!!!! And it had this cute little bird sitting on it’s head! I got so excited! And yes, the girl who handed me the shirt started laughing at me. I’m totally okay with it. It’s a hippo!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ hehehe

Well, by this point, Pink had crossed the finish line and was talking with her boyfriend. I walked up and gave her a high-five, said congrats. She had a huge smile on her face when she said, “Thank you so much for egging me on! I wouldn’t have finished as strong as I did without you!” Yeah, that made me feel pretty good. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I kept walking around, and ended up seeing Flash, talking to her mom and dad. So, again, I walked up and gave her a high-five, said congrats. She started laughing and said, “Thank you so much! You helped me finish!I was keeping up with you the whole race! Thank you for pushing me at the end!” Yeah, I was on cloud nine. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So by the end of the day, I had run 13.1 miles (not including the .25 mile warmup), high-fived two race-path volunteers, egged on two runners, and got a hippo medal and a hippo shirt. I’ll take the soreness and stiffness today and handle it with pride for that awesome of a race. ๐Ÿ™‚

Making my playlist!

I don’t always run with music, so it makes music a big motivator for me! I’m putting together my playlist for my first half marathon of 2012. Wow, that makes it sound like I doing a lot of ’em this year. . . Honestly, I’ve got the Jungle Run Half on the 15th, then nothing ’til October when I do the Nike Women’s Marathon (my first full 26.2!), and then ending the season with the Santa Barbara International (I’m doing the half).

I’m up for suggestions of events in NorCal for all the times in-between!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

 

So here’s a peek at my playlist so far:

I want to make sure I’ve got 3 hours of music, and then put it on shuffle, so that way I don’t hear the exact same songs in the exact same order as my trial run next week. (I like to make sure that I don’t think a song is great only to find out at mile 9 that it’s too slow and ruins my vibe. Yes, it’s happened before.)

And here’s where we come to the GoodNews/BadNews.

One thing making me nervous. . . My quad decided to check out a couple weeks ago. Translation: my quads hate me. I’m a visual person, so in really technical doctor-y speak, here’s what’s going on:

I see a sh*t load of foam rolling in my immediate future. And ice. I have to get to the store to get ice. . . So my goal for this year’s Jungle Run is the exact same as last year: finish without crawling across the finish line. I managed it last year off of foot surgery, with no training, so this year should be okay. Key word: should.

The cool news is that a few of the kickin’ ladies from the Lululemon Run Club are doing the half, and some are doing the 10k! So I’ll be with really supportive people that I’m already used to running with! Yay!! So between my music in one ear, and catching up on gossip in the other ear, I think I’ll be well distracted and motivated! ๐Ÿ™‚

Lululemon actually sends these signs to their stores for their educators to use at local races! Isn’t that totally kick a$$?! ๐Ÿ™‚

Memorial Weekend Coin Check

Now all you veterans out there had better be whippin’ out your coins!

For all you civilians out there: throughout a military career, you collect coins. These coins represent units, bases, special teams, deployments, anything the commander thinks is significant. *this is also the reason why commanders have their own coins* Now these coins are not purchased at the base stores (BX, NeX, etc). You have to earn these coins by being part of the unit, or if you’re really lucky, you can win them in poker games. These are basically glorified trading cards for the military.

Now the point of these coins to get alcohol. If these had another purpose when they were created, then I don’t know it. It’s been so diluted, that I’m sure no one knows it. Nowadays, coins are used as an alcohol pissing contest.

It goes like this:

Someone at the bar yells “Coin Check!”

Everyone in that person’s party has to pull out their coin, and place it on the bar/table/hold in the air. The person without a coin buys the next round.ย Have you ever drank with a military person?! I feel sorry for the shmuck without a coin! If everyone has a coin, and seriously-they all should!, the person with the lowest-ranking coin is the one who buys the next round.

This is where the Commander’s Coin comes in handy. You will never have to buy another drink again. And yes, the ranking system is sorta subjective.

So I’m bringing this up because I’m missing my military peeps. It’s Memorial Weekend and I’m not on base. This sucks. There’s a bond that goes beyond family and camaraderie between military members, and it sticks with you for life. Myย more than family is scattered across the world, and we still talk all the time and meet up when we can. These are the people who you can go 10 years without seeing and you’re still best friends. There is no time lost between military members.

On my way to Run Club this morning, I heard the most popular/famous/tear-enducing military song ever. It brought me right back to Tent City (a make-shift base), throwing darts, getting stuck inside the aircraft fuselage (I was the smallest, so I was the lucky one to go and fix the break. awesome), closing out hooches and bars, and Chicken Bulgogi from South Korea.

For everyone who has ever served, or is serving now: this one’s for you!

Giants VS A’s Game

Howdy howdy howdy!!! Long time no see! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Quick recap of what I’ve been up to:

On Friday, the Athletic Trainers and Athletic Training Students went out for a ball game. There were 13 of us. 2 of our group were A’s fans. The rest: Giants fans! Needless to say, we had a good time. Well, us Giants fans had a good time. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wes’ air guitar solo to Journey’s “When The Lights Go Down.” It’s a Giants staple. You know, being in San Francisco and all. ๐Ÿ˜‰

One of the most random moments was when Nate, one of the Trainers, stood up with a package of Oreos and pretended to be a vender. “OR-eos! Get your OR-eos!!” And sure enough, some random guy a few rows up yelled back, “Up here!” So what’d Nate do? Threw him an Oreo. This is why I love my coworkers.

The kids in front of us were really cute. And really smart, too. You know, rootin’ for the Giants and all. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I loved their sign!

So after a great game (we WON!), and the drive home from San Francisco, I got home about 1:30am. In bed at 2am. I was le tired.

But at 8:30am Saturday morning, I’m driving to Los Gatos for Lululemon’s Run Club! When I got there, I looked at everyone and said: I’m totally coming in last today. I’m effin’ exhausted. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The 5 miler turned into a 4.5 miler, but I still felt accomplished!!

The rest of Saturday was filled with cleaning the house and running errands. And neon pink compression socks. ๐Ÿ˜‰

By Saturday night, I was very tired, but feeling pretty normal. ๐Ÿ™‚

My First Run Club

Despite having to set some attitudinal alarms for this morning, the morning of my first run club went quite well!

I left the house at 8:20 this morning for the Lululemon Run Club at 9. And honestly, the only reason I knew where I was going was that the Jungle Run starts at where we were meeting. Otherwise, I would have had to leave earlier to allow time to get lost. It’s tradition. I have to get lost wherever I go. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I arrived at the track in plenty of time, which to me translates to: where’s the bathroom?! I’m telling ya, when you’re only 5 feet tall, liquids go straight through ya!

Our group consisted of Coach Lori (www.coutureconditioning.com), 3 Lululemon educators, a Lululemon ambassador (the only guy in a group full of women, must have been so horrible, hehe), and what appeared to be his wife/girlfriend. Since 2 of the educators were new to running, we did a very easy 3 miler along the Cooper Trail. The trail that my first half marathon of the season will be on. Awesome! Training time! Jungle run, look out! I’m gonna kick your bootay!

I have never had a run where I could talk the whole way through. . . and I liked it! Granted, 3 of us ended up running together, so 2 were talking while 1 was catching her breath. But still, it’s new for me! And I’m totally addicted!!

With the incline that the trail was on, I probably would have run too fast from the start and would have walked my sorry butt back up the trail (we did an out-and-back). But since we were slower than I normally train, and I had some awesome people to keep me accountable, I never walked!

And my feet and calves? Not a single problem!! HALLELUJAH!!!

For all of you contemplating a running club, don’t think about it: JUST GO!! Seriously, I’m addicted. I’ve never had a better time while running!

So after I got home, it was errand city. I ended up taking my mom and my son to Fleet Feet to get my mom an actual pair of running shoes (I refused to let her run in her Sketchers or Keens anymore. I put my Mizuno’d foot down!) After shoe shopping (where my son discovered the amazingness of Strawberry Banana GU Gel, thanks to one of the sales associates) it was time for PetSmart, Trader Joe’s, deliver irises to a friend, dinner out, and thenย finally home again. Only to freshen up and then head right back out to celebrate my friend’s birthday!

Busy busy busy day!!

And now I’m about to get ready to take my son to my grandma’s house for Mother’s Day. My son loves his GG! (Great Grandma, GG, get it?)

Run Run Run to Lululemon’s Run Club

Tuesday night I went to Lululemon (yeah, I told you Iโ€™d do it!) to check out their run club. Lululemon Santana Row was having a social hour/Q&A session. No running shoes required! Thank goodness, because I was freakin exhausted! And they had cookies!!!

 

As per usual with Lulu, I made sure I had time to shop. And as per usual, I went a bit overboard. Hey, donโ€™t blame me! Itโ€™s so easy to do!! I mean, come on, this is the company that I want to work for. Do really expect me to control myself in their stores? Pfft. Yeah right.

My loot? Thought youโ€™d never ask!

 

A running dress?!?! YES!!! And it’s way more flattering on a curvy figure, if I do say so myself. So lightweight and comfy!!!ย 

 

I don’t know how I never got the Run: Swiftly tank before now. Awesome. Seriously awesome.ย 

 

The cutest and most flattering board shorts you’ll ever own. Each color is reversible to a solid and a print. I got the black simply because my fave bikini is all black. Matchy matchy.

And the piece that I’ve been wanting for a while now, the hydration belt! 3 bottles, iPhone carrier, reflective race bib holder. Yes. Heather’s running in style now!!

Before this shopping trip, I had no actual hydration system for my runs. Which is pretty important. So, really, it wasnโ€™t all that hard to spend the bucks on both a hand-held and a belt Amphipod.

 

Anyway, back to the run club!

The Santana Row Lulu meets up on Wednesday nights for track work and Saturday mornings for long runs. Which has 2 drawbacks. (I refuse to say โ€˜problemsโ€™)

First, their schedule is set to coincide with the Lululemon SeaWheeze Half Marathon. So since my half is about a month before the SeaWheeze, the scheduling is a bit off for my training. And second, I teach on Wednesday nights. Greeaaaaaat. So Iโ€™ll only be able to do their long runs on Saturdays. Iโ€™m hoping that once the weather starts really heating up the time on Wednesday night gets pushed another hour back. Then, I could teach AND run with Lulu!! Yay!

This will be my first time running with a run club. . . Iโ€™m kinda scared for the people Iโ€™ll be running with. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Iโ€™m really looking forward to it!
